![]() With boxes at your feet and a dust rag in your hand, start off by cleaning out and getting rid of the things that don’t belong in the room you’re in. Whatever happens to be next, just do it! Declutter away! Then, work your way around the room clockwise. Don’t do all of them at once! Start at the entrance to the room This means just one drawer, one closet (or even one shelf in one closet), one magazine rack, or digging under just the furniture in the zone. Just do the job as fast as you can, and do not pull out more stuff than you can put away in that length of time. Set your timer for one hour (or 30, 15, or 10 minutes - it doesn’t matter how long). Label the boxes “Give Away,” “Throw Away,” and “Put Away.” Line the “Throw Away” box with a plastic garbage bag. You will need garbage bags, boxes, magic markers, and a dust rag. In a couple of months, the whole house will be decluttered. This goal may seem unattainable right now, but you can do it in little pieces. I did just get rid of a lot of clothing and tried stuff on but the closet is still too full and my clothes look crushed when I pull them out. If I like something on the left hand side very much then I have to take something out of the right hand side of the closet and put it in the bag to move the left hand piece to the keepers. I guess you could push half the clothes to one end and half to the other and say I keep the right hand stuff. I realize this might leave me with a mess on the bed if I don’t finish that day. Then I would look at the top piece on the bed and if I liked it too much to get rid of and it fit well when I tried it on then I found a piece in the closet that I didnt like as much and took it out. I spread what was in the closet out and everything had room to breathe, so nice. I decided to pull exactly half the stuff out of my closet from one end. I was moving and knew I didnt need to bring all those clothes. I did it somewhat the same way you did but a little differently too. I filled a trash bag with things to donate that I didn’t even have to stop and think about. A blouse with weird-length sleeves can go in the Donate Box (or bag) without any much emotional drama when I can see clearly that the blouse with perfect-length sleeves deserves to be on the hanger more than it does.Īlso, just being in the closet and purposefully looking at my clothes revealed a whole lotta DUHS. I’d chosen to keep them in the past, but when I looked at them comparatively with another piece of clothing that was fighting for the same available hanger, I saw that they needed to go. I was able to part with some clothes that were mostly fine but I didn’t wear often (or ever) for whatever reason. I decided to use my beloved (referral link alert) velvet hangers as the deciding factor when choosing which clothes should stay and which clothes should go. Over the weekend, I decluttered my closet.
